Manchester United sign Tynan Thompson, but he won't face Rosenborg BK
Manchester United have officially signed promising winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur. However, the 18-year-old Thompson will not be part of United's squad against Rosenborg BK in Friday's pre-season game. Rosenborg BK currently sit 7th in Eliteserien with 42 points from 30 games (11 wins, 9 draws, 10 losses).
Who is Tynan Thompson?
Thompson, born in London, has developed through Tottenham Hotspur's academy since joining at U12 level. He has played regularly for both the U18 and U21 teams, showing great versatility as a left winger, right winger, and central midfielder. In the 2024/25 season, he scored 7 goals and provided 6 assists in 23 league games for the U18s. He was later promoted to the U21s, where he scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists in 16 league games, as well as 7 goals in 7 UEFA Youth League matches.
Why was he sold?
Tottenham have spent heavily this summer and aim to balance their books by selling players. Thompson was sold for up to £8 million, plus add-ons depending on his first-team achievements. Tottenham also included a 15% sell-on clause in the deal. Thompson was part of Tottenham's Champions League squad against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund but never made his first-team debut.
What's next for Rosenborg BK?
Rosenborg BK, who have scored 45 goals and conceded 42 this season, are 29 points behind league leaders Viking. The team has won 11, drawn 9, and lost 10 of their 30 games, with a recent form of WLWLD. The pre-season game against Manchester United is an important test for Rosenborg, even though Thompson won't play.
